there but for the grace of god?

Someone has launched an effort to crowdsource the pay and working conditions for adjunct faculty (Google doc).

In case that was too depressing, I have added an adorable video of Veronica Mars going ape[bother] over having a sloth at her birthday party. Note that you, too, can have a sloth appear at your birthday party, as long as you are willing to teach forty-ish English courses next semester for $600/course at South Suburban College.

Here’s an idea: let’s see if we can target the schools that the Chronicle of Higher Ed recently identified as “the best schools to work for” and find out whether contingent faculty on those campuses would agree!

Given that I work at one of these schools, I’m particularly interested in what might emerge from this study. Do the perks for the TT-faculty at those colleges come at the expense of adjuncts, or do adjuncts benefit from them as well?

And the Kristen Bell thing is adorable. My favorite part is the end where Ellen fools her into thinking there’s a sloth there at the studio.

The spreadsheet is pretty interesting! Pay for a course ranges from under $1000 to about $7000.

Speaking of “there but for the grace of god,” isn’t it crazy how we tenure-tracked sociologists, who should know an arbitrary hierarchy when we see one, find it so east to look down our noses as our colleagues stuck on the adjunct treadmill?
