Ah yes, the good old days…..I remember Walt Gove telling me about walking the halls of the ASA meetings when he was about to finish his PhD and people would just come up to him and offer him jobs–not because they recognized his name from his early articles–just because he was young and they figured they might get him.


  2. The article mentions how some graduate students earn $4,000/year. Using the BLS’s CPI calculator (http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl), that works out to be 27,705.14 in 2010 dollars.

    This is somewhat misleading, though, considering that the price basket of the CPI probably doesn’t include Top Ramen.


  3. Grad students in my dept. make around $27700/year, not including tuition & health care. Too bad the job market isn’t also comparable to 1965.
