guilt and defense

I am delighted to announce the release of the first of two volumes of Frankfurt School work on public opinion and postwar Germany, translated, edited, and introduced by Jeffrey K. Olick and myself!

In this volume we present the first-ever English translation of Adorno’s “Guilt and Defense” (Schuld und Abwehr) along with a hostile review of the project from which it emerged by the right-wing psychologist Peter Hofst√§tter, Adorno’s angry response, and the previously-available “The Meaning of Working Through the Past.” We also offer an introduction setting the research and the essay in historical context.

  1. Mazel Tov, Andy (and Jeff)! It looks like a terrific piece, and I hope it brings you twice as many days of pleasure as it took days of work to complete.
