(ti = wtf?)

Working on a grant proposal due tomorrow. I just went to look up a journal on Northwestern’s online catalog. A message shows up in red saying: ‘NOTE: TITLE SEARCH NOT WORKING — USE SUBJECT SEARCH INSTEAD’.

How the catbother does an online catalog’s title search break?

  1. It sounds like your IT department was trained by the same crack group of technologists that runs the show at my institution.

  2. I’m a defensive librarian but even I’ll admit that our technology leaves a lot to be desired. If your catalog isn’t working, I’d suggest trying the title search in WorldCat in the meantime–you’ll be able to see holdings for Northwestern, along with any metadata you might need for the proposal. Although a subject/keyword search will pull it up in your local catalog too, I guess. Must be something funny with whatever code it’s using for left anchored searching.
