Anyone want to bet about who can lose the most weight before ASA? I’ll let Jeremy determine “fair” rules – % of BMI, or whatever. $20 to play. I guess it works better than most diets. It just feels wrong.

Crap. Now ASA has to be like my high school reunion, except that it’s every year.
@1: Lolz.
I’m not sure if sociologists are the rational actors that respond to economic incentives..
Now if you could somehow guarantee that winning would lead to having an article fast tracked for publication, you might have more takers.
I don’t buy this working for an annual conference.The month to month bet in the Times article seems like it might actually work. But I’ve done this at work where weigh in was every 6 months. And it ends up with people who start with good intentions, not keeping it up and just going on low/no carb diets for last month before weigh in. I didn’t even go low carb as I can normally loose 15+ lbs by just cutting out drinking for two months. Getting off the sauce for two months to win money that will be spent immediately at a bar isn’t a good way to improve your health.
