I looked at the date on my computer just now and started trying to remember whose birthday July 8 was. Then I remember, it’s not a birthday: it’s the anniversary of when I started blogging. A thing about writing is that you can feel like you aren’t making any real progress day after day, but if you keep writing something, at some point you look back and marvel at how much you’ve done. A thing about living is that you can feel like not much is going on any particular day, but then you start paging through the five years of posts and you realize that so much has happened.
As a present on my bloggerversary, American Airlines’s website now says my luggage has been found and is being shipped from Chicago.
Update: Sal has a voicemail from United yesterday that they found his luggage, while I checked American’s website last night and there was nothing. So, United beats American on this one.
Postscript: Fabio has a great recent post on why he blogs. Ditto for me, more or less.

happy bloggerversary!
Wow. Your blog and my graduate school career are the same age. I started reading your stuff pretty early on that first year - I guess that makes me an old-time lurker. I was just wondering about Lonely Donut Man the other day, and whether he is still gracing other blogs with his rhymes.
Congrats - and I am so glad they found your luggage!
Go, Jeremy! Also, “Lonely Donut Man”? I am a more recent, but no less fervent fan.
Congrats! you should post your first post!
Happy blog birthday! And yay for found luggage!
happy anniversary!
Ah, the Lonely Donut Man. Good times.
Happy bloggerversary.
Happy blogiversary. Can we toast you in Boston? When & where? :-)
Most excellent!
Was I alone in wondering, for perhaps only a moment, whether the teaching gig in Africa was merely a front for finishing old business on the continent from your JFW days?
