happy may day

Dear America -

Happy May Day. In my humble opinion we shouldn’t be working today. Then again I write this from my office. My first post since April 15th! Wow… What’s happened? Well, in January I found out that my corneas are quickly degenerating. And so I can’t see very well. I have limited work time, and blog time doesn’t really count. But I just got another treatment and things seem much better! So here’s hoping for the best (eventually I will need transplants, but hopefully “eventually” will be later rather than sooner)! As for May Day: workers of the world unite! That means you. Me, I have to get back to work…

Oh wow, I am so sorry to hear about your eyes! I do hope they get better.

That is awful! I hope they (and you) get better, too, especially if it means more blogging.

I realized that this was quite vague. I have Keratoconus. So basically everything looks like that little picture they have up on their website. Everything is blurred and doubled. Which as you might imagine, is quite annoying. I can kinda fix it with glasses, but not really. It’s a temporary fix. I’m plugging forward. Oddly, it has made me more efficient. Limited time means using it much better. That said, it really has limited how and when I can work. And it has made me worry about being in a bad position for tenure and my future work-life (if I can’t see well, I can’t really read much and/or write much). I appears that this was caused by my getting LASIK. So if you’re thinking about getting that surgery, I’d suggest making sure you talk to your doctor about the thickness of your corneas and the risks involved… Mine seems to have been quite careless.

Oh no, Shaymus, that’s awful! Is there a point you have to get to before you’re a candidate for the corneal transplants, or is that just something you’d rather not do in the near future?

I’d rather not do it right now. I could be out of commission for a while after that surgery (3 months per eye). So I’m working feverishly on “clearing my plate” before I do anything like that. I can’t imagine what it would be like to come back to work after 6 months, but I imagine it wouldn’t be easy, and put me ever further behind. Plus though the surgery is fairly common there are still quite serious risks. At 29 I really worry about what it will mean in the many years ahead to have the surgery.

I’m so sorry! I hope that you have Very Good Doctors in NY and that they help you identify the best possible options. Count me in for bringing you Artopolis cookies, should you ever need them to speed a recovery.
