Ralph Nader is running for president.  My presumption is that he will not be invited to have a quasi-rally at ASA, like in 2000, but you never know.  After all, note #5 in Kestrel’s list of “How many sociologists does it take to screw in a light bulb?

I have said that it was good that I started at Wisconsin in Spring 2001 rather than Fall 2000, as I think I might have ended up punching someone from Madison’s massive Nader 2000 contingent and, even though it’s not explicitly discussed as such in Olderwoman’s advice for assistant professors, that would have been inadvisable.

i was unfortunate enough to be in Madison in Fall 2000 — it WAS really difficult to keep from punching people… i’m not terribly politically active and usually stay out of things as a result but this drove me nuts. i’m pretty sure the punching wouldn’t have been advisable for students either.

i go for the third party candidate thing in theory, but given the last few years of W and that it’s always people like Nader and Ron Paul who represent the alternative, it’s pretty hard to go along in practice.
