a modest proposal

I hereby propose that we try to sell ad space on our blog. Why? So that we can generate some revenue for a scatterplot party at ASA and T-shirts. I figure with the 5 cents a day we are likely to make we could buy some pretty sweet pizza rolls for the party. As for the T-shirts, the design is still up in the air. Although I would lobby hard for “Reality check on aisle F*CK YOU!” on the back and Eszter’s multiple choice options on the front. Oh, we’re throwing a party. I wonder how much it costs to get one of those rooms at the hotel. That would be hilarious. At least to me.*

*Amendment: I have just learned that WordPress does not allow ads (unless we get 500,000 visitors/day). So we have two options: we can each recruit 20,000 people to start viewing our blog OR we’ll have to throw down some coin. The second option allows  us to finally figure out a truly equitable taxation scheme. Which may result in the first Nobel Prize (in economics) ever given to a sociologist (that is, if soc2econ doesn’t happen first).

Well, isn’t that going to be the event of the season?

I’ve already picked out my dress.

I will pay whatever we could make by any rational calculation in ad revenue to avoid having any ads on Scatterplot.

Well, you could just put a paypal donation widget on the sidebar. I’d donate. I like parties! And t-shirts.

please don’t ever have ads on scatterplot.

i’d rather pay twice the price for a scatterplot t-shirt to support the party cause.

Um… just for the record: I didn’t really think we should/could sell ad space on here. It was kinda just an entre in talking about throwing a party. Which I am planning on looking into tomorrow…

OK, good. I never know where we might be on the Scatterplot Slippery Slope. I’m all for talking about parties.

BTW, Tina and I had an idea that is so much more awesome than Scatterplot ASA T-shirts that I almost can’t stand it. Stay tuned.

new banner! what’s the significance of the 9 scatterplotted dots?

If we keep this banner, we need to make up an origin myth for the Significance Of The Nine Dots. Perhaps we will have a contest.

I like the old banner, but if we keep the new one, I’ll participate in the myth-making.

I wonder how much it costs to get one of those rooms at the hotel.

If you’re talking about one of the rooms in which sessions are hosted then I think they’re ridiculously expensive. It would be cheaper to just get an extra hotel room for a day if the preference was to party at a hotel.

Eszter’s multiple choice options on the front

Uhm, that was a tongue-in-cheek comment in response to the suggestion to make different shirts for those who write at Scatterplot vs those who read it. But feel free to run with it in whatever direction if you’d like.

    If we keep this banner

What was wrong with the old banner (other than that the second version looked like a Petri dish;)? I liked the font, but I’m sure we’ll get used to this one just the same. The nine dots are sort of cute. You can auction off their naming rights and fund the party that way.

I just looked into getting a room at the hotel. I actually suspect we’d need a suite. There are none available! ASA must have reserved them all… Ah well. We’ll just have to descend on a local bar/restaurant. It’s months away. But I saw we nominate a planning committee. Or perhaps an exploratory committee that will then propose a planning committee to be voted on.

Shamus, the rest of us on the blog had a skype meeting–where were you?–and we decided you were the perfect person to make the party arrangements. Congratulations! We’re looking forward to reviewing your top 3 proposals by the end of the month.
