Even as scientists in the United States are calling for the presidential candidates to participate in a debate about science, and to take back the role of Science Adviser from its current status as a travesty, Canada announces that it will eliminate its National Science Adviser position. That is moving in the wrong direction.

In the US, I think the existence of the National Academy of Sciences is much more important substantively than the existence of a specific science adviser per se. Does Canada have a counterpart to that?

Yes, there is a similar organization, but this would be more of a lobbying organization than a part of the administration. I agree with Mooney that someone among the presidents’ advisers should be an expert on science.
