The other day Omar and I were listening to an NPR segment reporting that leading economists were predicting a 50/50 chance of a recession in 2008. We immediately turned to one another and asked where our careers would be heading if we made a habit out of predicting 50/50 chances of anything.
Fast-forward to reading today’s weather report. The local paper had an even more wishy-washy weather forecast than usual, so I checked out a weather website. Granted I don’t check this site often, but it was the first time that I ever noticed the inclusion of question marks over the weather icons:

Apparently even weather people aren’t comfortable with 50/50 and find it necessary to add question marks unless they can get up to 60%.

The classic Irish weather forecast is “sunny spells and scattered showers.”
